The bird got its name because it reminded early explorers of the scarlet robes of the cardinals of the Roman Catholic church. cardinal: One of the seventy ecclesiastical princes (six cardinal bishops, fifty cardinal priests, and fourteen cardinal deacons) who constitute the popes council, or the sacred college, and to whom the right of electing the pope has been restricted since the third Lateran council in 1173. In the U.S., the cardinal is a popular sports mascot. Universities that have it as their mascot include Ball State, Plattsburgh, and the University of Louisville. Even the University of Arkansas, famous for its Razorback mascot, derives its school colors of red and white from an association with the bird. Before the adoption of the razorback mascot, the university football team, organized in 1894, was called the Cardinals and the school colors were cardinal red and white. The story is that, after the triumphant 1909 season, the coach told the team that theyd played like a wild band of razorback hogs. The Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, on August 6, 1945. The world would never be the same. This paper will discuss the significance of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and how they led to the success of the Allied forces. It will also discuss how the United States developed the atomic bomb, the decision to drop the bomb, the weakening of Japan, the actual bombing an destruction of both cities, the surrender of Japan and the impact the atomic bomb would have in the future. During World War II, the United States was afraid that Germany would develop the atomic bomb first. Germany had taken over Norway, which was a heavy water supply and Czechoslovakia, which was a uranium supply. Both of these, water and uranium, were needed to make the atomic bomb. Therefore, the United States initiated a top secret program called the Manhattan Project. Even the Vice President didn't know about this project. The Manhattan Project cost over 2 billion dollars. Yet, Congress never voted to fund this program (Hoare, 1987, 10-14). Roosevelt authorized scientists to find out if an atomic bomb could be built. On December 2, 1942, scientists working in a secret laboratory under the bleachers of a football field in Chicago achieved the first man-made nuclear reaction. An atomic bomb could now be developed. Many scientists and other skilled workers participated in the making of the first atomic bomb. However, only few knew what they were making. In 1944, after D-Day, the Alsos (a troop sent to find how far the Germans had come in the building of the atomic bomb) radioed back that they had given up in their attempt to make it. Still, despite scientists' pleas with the President to discontinue it, the U.S. maintained the work on their atomic bomb (Conrad, 1982, 12-16). In Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945, the first atomic bomb was detonated in the desert. The bomb was much more explosive than scientists thought it would be. The 100 foot tower which housed the bomb was totally destroyed by the blast. ("World War II", 1997, 1-2). After the bomb exploded, Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Manhattan Project, said, "Behold. I have become death, destroyer of worlds." (Hoare, 1987, 18) When Harry Trum... ...p; The United States, as well as the Allied forces, saved many lives by dropping the atomic bomb. The dropping of the atomic bomb, even though it killed hundreds of thousands Japanese people, saved more Americans and other Allied soldiers that would have been killed in battle. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki may not have been exciting battles, but they may have been the most important weapons used in World War II. If Japan had not surrendered, more atomic bombs may have been dropped and it would be very significant that the United States had made them. Even though only two were dropped, they killed many Japanese, making the government fearful that more would be dropped if they did not surrender (Conrad, 1982, 20-22). When looking back upon the six years of World War II, the three days surrounding the dropping of the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki had far greater impact than all of the battles preceding them. The destruction they wrought far surpassed anything ever seen before. As cited in this paper, the atomic bombs, Fat Man and Little Boy, were pivotal to the success of the Allied forces.

II. What is the main idea of the article? Colleges and universities have begun to build university linked housing for older alumni. This offers the alumni the ability to take part on campus, but it also creates revenue for schools needing more funding. III. How does the author support his main ideas? Dan Kadlec, the author of this article, interviewed representatives from UCLA and Ohio State University about the creation of university linked retirement villages. Both representatives were quite excited about the idea, with David Kane from UCLA hoping to create at least a dozen areas that could hold all ages of UCLA graduates. Bonnie Kantor, from Ohio State, looks more toward the wealth of knowledge that older students will bring to classes and dreams of the impact that building assisted living facilities around medical and nursing schools could have. Fifty facilities have been built around the country, some of the most notable being at Penn State, Notre Dame, and the University of Florida. Care has to be taken that the facilities don’t resemble retirement homes, because if they do it is likely â€Å"Baby Boomers† will not want to move in. Much more important than the input of older students on classes is the money that they will add to the schools’ bottom line. Adequate funding is becoming difficult to get, and private schools have become too expensive for most students. Building these villages is not cheap, but neither is the rent. Schools also hope that alumni who are deeply involved with the school will be willing to give bigger and better donations as well. Of course, there are the naysayers. There is worry that allegations of abuse from an assisted living facility could ruin the schools both financially and in reputation. There is also the concern that small schools might build facilities and not have enough interest to make them profitable. The search for funding does not end at retirement villages, however. Greenfield vs Brownfield Sites for Housing Development A Brownfield site is land which has been developed previously and is or has been occupied by a permanent structure. It may be in an urban or rural setting. It does not include agricultural land, forest or parks. Whereas a Greenfield site is Land which has not been occupied by a permanent structure. It usually applies to land in the countryside but can be undeveloped land within an urban setting. Both of these sites can be ideal for the development of new housing but both also have benefits and drawbacks to doing so. Firstly redeveloping Brownfield sites eases pressure on Greenfield sites and is more sustainable. Although Greenfield sites are often on the edge of towns and cities and may have better access, have less congestion, be in a more pleasant environment and have more space and room to expand. Redeveloping a Brownfield site would cause House prices to increase in inner city areas as people are encouraged back to the area. This is a benefit for people already living there but, this might mean that other people cannot afford the houses, and the council will have to provide for them which may cause problems. Basic Infrastructure already exists in Brownfield sites but in Greenfield sites new drainage, electricity, roads etc. would all have to be produced deeming them more expensive. Although Light industry and Science Parks favour out of town locations on Greenfield sites opposed to Brownfield sites and crucially so do their workers who are happier to live away from urban areas. New sites are easier to build on as remains of previous land use do not need to be cleared making them more attractive to retail parks, housing developers etc. But using Greenfield sites is not sustainable as there is too much pressure on the rural-urban fringe therefore making the development of Brownfield sites a better option. There is an issue of contamination and making sites safe for development, given what the land may have been used for before but towns and cities do not want their areas to decay and redeveloping these areas results in more people coming to the area. This helps local businesses as more people means more customers. Building on Greenfield sites on the other hand pulls people out of the towns and cities causing shops etc. aving to re locate on the edge of and towns and cities. In conclusion I feel looking at the benefits and drawbacks of using Brownfield and Greenfield sites for housing redevelopment it would be most beneficial to use Brownfield sites firstly because it is the more sustainable option also the basic infrastructure already exists as well as there being public transport links already in place in many area s. Also it is would help develop areas which may be suffering and increase house prices within that area, making them more wealthy and hopefully lowering crime rates etc.

Sometimes, a better solution is to break the sentence into shorter, more easily digestible servings, but often, the sentence is navigable when mere commas set off the statement’s elements- and sometimes the syntax requires commas and prohibits semicolons. (See the first paragraph of this post for a refresher about the two nearly distinct functions of a semicolon, and read this overview of the punctuation mark’s roles.) Consider the following sentence: â€Å"Decisions to decrease inventory levels; maintain a sole†source or single†source strategic supplier in any country of the world; and adopt just†in†time manufacturing and delivery techniques versus higher inventory levels, multiple suppliers, and other buffers in the process involve trade†off decisions where quality, time, and cost considerations often win out over business-continuity considerations.† Here, semicolons are inappropriate because using them isolates the predicate (the part of the sentence beginning with involve) so that it appears to apply only to the third item in the list rather than to all items. (This is because a supercomma semicolon partly incorporates the role of a weak-period semicolon, in that it nearly grammatically sequesters whatever it sets off.) The sentence is sufficiently punctuated as shown here: â€Å"Decisions to decrease inventory levels, maintain a sole†source or single†source strategic supplier in any country of the world, and adopt just†in†time manufacturing and delivery techniques versus higher inventory levels, multiple suppliers, and other buffers in the process involve trade†off decisions where quality, time, and cost considerations often win out over business-continuity considerations.† An alternative that somewhat eases the onslaught of comma-laden word groupings is â€Å"The following factors involve trade†off decisions where quality, time, and cost considerations often win out over business-continuity considerations: Decisions to decrease inventory levels, maintain a sole†source or single†source strategic supplier in any country of the world, and adopt just†in†time manufacturing and delivery techniques versus higher inventory levels, multiple suppliers, and other buffers in the process.† (Even though the last item itself includes several subitems, which seemingly necessitates the use of supercomma semicolons, the presence of a verb in each item- and the fact that it is the final item- effectively distinguishes the items so that commas are sufficient.) A Guide to Conjugating the French Amener (to Bring, Take) When learning French, you will often need to use the verb  amener  which means to take or to bring. This is used in the context of take the dog to the park or something similar. This is a relatively easy French lesson to follow and good practice for conjugating a stem-changing verb. How to Conjugate the French Verb  Amener To conjugate a verb means to adapt it to match the subject pronoun you are speaking about. We do the same thing in English, though the conjugations are often simple such as using takes instead of take. Each verb form for  amener  is slightly different depending on subject. Pronouns like I, you, he, or we each have their own translation in French j, tu, il, nous, etc. Its also important to know that  amener  is a  stem-changing verb. This means that conjugating  the verb uses the same endings as regular -er verbs. That makes this a very easy conjugation. Study this chart to learn how to conjugate this verb in French. It tells you which form to use with each subject and in each tense.  For example, to say I bring, you will say jamà ¨ne. To say we will bring, you will say nous  amà ¨nerez. The -ant ending is similar to the -ing we use in English, which makes the verb mean bringing or taking. This verb form is quite resourceful as it can also be an adjective, gerund, or even a noun in the right context. Amener  in the Past Tense Passà © composà ©Ã‚  is the most common form of past tense in the French language. When you want to say that you brought or took something, you will need to add the appropriate  auxiliary verb. In the case of amener, that is  avoir. Were not quite done, though, because you will also need the  past participle  of the verb to complete the phrase. For amener, that is simply  amenà ©. That is used no matter the subject pronoun. Now that we know all the pieces for the past tense, lets put it to use. To say I brought in French, you will say jai  amenà ©. In this case,  ai  is the conjugate for that helping or auxiliary verb,  avoir. More Conjugations of  Amener Those are the simple conjugations of  amener  and ones that you will use quite often. There are other forms of this verb that you may or may not need, but its good to be aware of them. The subjunctive refers to a verb mood expressing that something is uncertain. The conditional is another verb mood that is used when the action might happen under certain conditions. The passà ©Ã‚  simple and imperfect subjunctive forms are used in formal writing. Unless youre learning how to write properly in French, its not likely that you will use them. The imperative form is another verb mood used to request, give, or make a request. The primary difference here is that you will not use the subject pronoun. Instead, you simply use the imperative verb form. For example, instead of saying tu  amà ¨ne you can simply say amà ¨ne. Imperative (tu) amà ¨ne (nous) amenons (vous) amenez Other Verbs Meaning To Take In English, we use the word take in many contexts. There is no single to take word in French.  As with many languages, French uses a few verbs to indicate the different meanings of to take.   Where  amener  is more like to bring,  accepter  means to accept. The verb for actually taking something is  prendre. Its a good idea to study all of these at once so you know when to use each.

In addition, the reader might think that not all relevant factors have been considered in the text, because he just claims that violent media is mostly good for children, but does not support it with any data. Gerard Jones seems to target mostly adults, especially those adults who are also parents. In the last part of the text, he uses â€Å"we† (for adults/ parents) and â€Å"they† (for children), for example, he says: â€Å"We moan to other parents† and â€Å"We risk confusing them†. Jones gains his audience’s trust by telling them about his own and his son’s experience with violent media and how it helped both of them. By writing about his experience, the audience feels as if a relationship is established, which in turn makes him trustworthy. So, writing about his own experience is the first part of his strategy and the second part is to write about his work with the psychologist Melanie Moore and examples about how violent media has
